Never Get Password Once I Attempt to "Create a New User"

by Anonymous Monk
on Jun 01, 2004 at 19:18 UTC ( #358443=monkdiscuss: print w/replies, xml ) Need Help??

Several times over the last few years I have attempted to register at Perlmonks. I follow the instructions for Create a New User. I read the message saying that my password will be e-mailed to me. Then the password never arrives! I go to login, using one of my regular passwords, and I get the message "Oops wrong login or password".

I then click on the link for "password reminder". I fill in my username and e-mail address, click on the link that calls me a cowboy, and read the message saying my password should be on the way. But it never arrives!

I know I've been through this 3 or 4 times -- because perlmonks tells me that my 3 previous usernames are already taken ... even though I've never gotten a password for any of them and have never been able to post.

Only today did I learn that one could post anonymously ... and then at first I didnít realize that the posting box is all the way at the bottom of the page.

If there are any perlmonks administrators out there who could advise me as to how I can get a password, please contact me off list at jkeen_at_verizon*dot*net. Thank you very much.

In attempting to register with perlmonks, I've used two different mail providers over the years, and haven't succeeded with either one. One of them, verizon.net, is very big, and I'm sure there must be other monks for whom it is the provider.

This morning I am trying yet again to register.

And this time it worked! Thanks to those who responded.

        (Sigh of relief.)

In addition, you might want to check that your client is not blocking or moving the mail. I have seen this sort of issue many times with both the Outlook Express and Yahoo Web clients.

FWI, no e-mails have been sent to the e-mail address you gave (over the last few years). Only one "jkeen" e-mail was sent, but it was to a different domain. Not much other investigation I can think to do at this point since you didn't give me much to go on.

I fill in my username and e-mail address, click on the link that calls me a cowboy

Perhaps you should read the instructions: "one of the following blanks" (extra emphasis added by me to the emphasis copied from the original instructions).

Looking at the code, it appears to ignore the e-mail address if you enter a monkname (so perhaps you entered the e-mail address incorrectly when you created the user). So, if you want someone to help you with this, you're going to have to tell us what username(s) you were trying to register.

BTW, I'd like to revamp new user creation so that monknames don't get tied up when the e-mail doesn't get retrieved.

I'm sorry you've had so little success with this. I don't have an e-mail account at the moment so it is quite inconvenient for my to try e-mailing you. Sorry.

Maybe you mistyped your email when you registered.

Plankton: 1% Evil, 99% Hot Gas.
Since I've attempted to register at least 4 times, I would have had to mistype my e-mail address at least 4 times. Not very likely.
