Golf Channel

by dragonchild (Archbishop)
on Apr 29, 2004 at 18:34 UTC ( [id://349234]=monkdiscuss: print w/replies, xml ) Need Help??

Golfing is something a number of monks do, including yours truly, but there isn't anywhere we can post about it. I recently wanted to challenge some of the monks to golf something, but it's not a Meditation, it's not a SOPW ... I had nowhere to go! :-(

Can we get a golf channel, please?

I think this is a fine idea. If we can have channels for Obfuscation and Poetry, why not Golf? I proposed the same idea a while ago, and others before me. Each time, there was some support for it.

Also, in case you didn't already know about it, there's a mailing list dedicated to Perl golf: golf@perl.org. Subscribe by sending mail to golf-subscribe@perl.org. A lot of the discussion on that list is about the golf contests that run quite often on Terje Kristensen's Perl golf site.

    another thought...

it's very easy to get into a situation, where you/we are creating a section for every little thing out there. And if some new perl game or activity is created, the question will arise "can this have its own section?"

    so why not do this...
create a GAMES or GAMES/TOURNAMENTS section where Golf could be a subsection of that. (Most likely the largest portion) - but this would allow for other competitions, etc that might be created in the future.

This sounds like an excellent idea to me. I mean, someone could easily start their own challenges to post here.

I read all the posts your search turns up, and I can't see any *reasons* there at all. (The occasional 'I dont like' or 'We dont need', but those arent reasons, just excuses) - From which I take it the only real reason is that either a) adding new sections is hard (which wouldnt surprise me), or b) nobody has the time or motivation.

Regardless, this doesn't stop any pmdev from looking into the possibility. I'm not fond of golf at all, but I might.. Or someone else might get there first. Any that are so inclined are welcome to have a go at figuring out how it might work on the/our development server, just ask.

On a side note, I'd prefer if golfing contests disappeared from Meditations, then I wouldn't have to recognise and skip over them, I could just ignore the section, much like I do obfu and poetry..

      C.

I read those posts just now (the ones you linked to, i didn't search) and there realy weren't any rebutals. The normal "we hate change and thats why" reason. Is it difficult to just add a new section or is just a matter of keeping things simple? I'm not trying to be antogonistic I'm just curious of what reasons there are for not adding a category for golfing.

As eric256 and castaway have already said, there weren't any obvious reasons listed in the cites you posted. Would you, as a member of both power users and pmdev, be able to tell us why a Golfing section wouldn't be feasible?

If needed, couldn't we just morph the Craft section (which is unused) or the Quests section (which hasn't been posted to in 3 years) into a Golf section?

at first, i was like... "why golf, why not soccer or hockey?" :-P

after readin' up on it - it sounded like a cool idea. If this site is the creme de la creme de la perl culture... and this is an activity growing in popularity amoungst perl hackers - why wouldn't it be here?

if the people that want this - want to set it up, organize, manage, and work out the details - why not let them do it? If you don't wish to participate, then don't.

Well, there is a golf mailing list - a split off from the fun with perl mailinglist.

I think that this is on purpose. Too much golfing is no good. Some golfs can be posted in SOPW or Obfuscations sections, but if there were a separate Golf section, we would be golf-sick.

Are we Meditations sick? Are we Craft sick? How about Snippets sick?

Also, how on earth is a golf challenge a valid SOPW?

This will be a very harsh post.

Are we Meditations sick? Are we Craft sick? How about Snippets sick?

I think I didn't express myself well. I thought of that golfing is a bad kind of premature optimization that we should avoid. If I see much code like that, I start to become like that without even noticing.

I mean, from most obfus, it is evident that you should not use such features in production code, still you can learn something from obfus, or ignore them. The difference with obfus is that they may seem like a good idea, just like most premature optimizations at first glance. While you may still learn from a golf, I think that putting them to the obfu section might help.

Also, how on earth is a golf challenge a valid SOPW?

You're right, it's not. Still some people have posted golfs there. (Some real golfs too, but some are only golf-like, the most often being to write the intersection of two regexen as one regex as short as possible: golf this reg ex) They probably don't understand why golf is bad. But a separate section would just make it worse.
