As others mentioned, the split will remove the newlines. However, if there is still unexplained weirdness you might want to check to see if there is an issue with how a newline is defined. Cross-platform differences can cause headaches. See Newlines: reading files that were created on other platforms and similar.

<code> tags not
<pre> tags. In fact, <pre>
tags should generally be avoided. If they must
be used, extreme care should be
taken to ensure that their contents do not
have long lines (<70 chars), in order to prevent
horizontal scrolling (and possible janitor
intervention).
