Did you work at Sikorsky in the 1980s? It seems to have been the preferred spelling there, to the point of my being admonished for using the correct spelling after showing them the entry in the dictionary

<pre> tags. In fact, <pre>
tags should generally be avoided. If they must
be used, extreme care should be
taken to ensure that their contents do not
have long lines (<70 chars), in order to prevent
horizontal scrolling (and possible janitor
intervention).
