Something like:
use YAML;
my %count_per_100k;
while (<DATA>) {
my ($text, $count) = split;
next unless $text =~ /gene/;
$count_per_100k{int($count / 100_000)}++;
}
print Dump \%count_per_100k;
__DATA__
...
Output:
---
0: 14
1: 18
2: 1
At least, I think that's your question. Perhaps you want to do something different.

Posts may use any of the Perl Monks Approved HTML tags. Currently these include the following:
<code> <a> <b> <big>
<blockquote> <br /> <dd>
<dl> <dt> <em> <font>
<h1> <h2> <h3> <h4>
<h5> <h6> <hr /> <i>
<li> <nbsp> <ol> <p>
<small> <strike> <strong>
  <table>
<td> <th> <tr> <tt>
<u> <ul>
-
Snippets of code should be wrapped in
<code> tags not
<pre> tags. In fact, <pre>
tags should generally be avoided. If they must
be used, extreme care should be
taken to ensure that their contents do not
have long lines (<70 chars), in order to prevent
horizontal scrolling (and possible janitor
intervention).
