Could you post some examples of setting values to 1000? run it through the perl debugger and see if you can find where it sets the values to 1000 and then if it is truly 1000.

<pre> tags. In fact, <pre>
tags should generally be avoided. If they must
be used, extreme care should be
taken to ensure that their contents do not
have long lines (<70 chars), in order to prevent
horizontal scrolling (and possible janitor
intervention).
