Erm, the AUTOMATED_TESTING environment variable being set is me the CPAN Tester letting you the CPAN author know that the environment that is being tested under is an automated smoke tester (ie. no human present). It has no other utility implied or otherwise

<pre> tags. In fact, <pre>
tags should generally be avoided. If they must
be used, extreme care should be
taken to ensure that their contents do not
have long lines (<70 chars), in order to prevent
horizontal scrolling (and possible janitor
intervention).
