Or, as already mentioned, use Switch.
Oh no, don't. Use given, when if you're running perl 5.10, or use some other nethod, but don't use Switch.pm if you can. It's a source filter so it's slow, prone to weird untractable bugs, won't work in "eval", etc.

<pre> tags. In fact, <pre>
tags should generally be avoided. If they must
be used, extreme care should be
taken to ensure that their contents do not
have long lines (<70 chars), in order to prevent
horizontal scrolling (and possible janitor
intervention).
