While it doesn't seem to be in the documentation at perldoc.perl.org, the Perl 5.10 documentation for perlre has a section called "Character Classes and other Special Escapes" that says:
\wMatch a "word" character (alphanumeric plus "_")

<pre> tags. In fact, <pre>
tags should generally be avoided. If they must
be used, extreme care should be
taken to ensure that their contents do not
have long lines (<70 chars), in order to prevent
horizontal scrolling (and possible janitor
intervention).
