$x++; # keep track of how many users have logged in
Actually, I think that's a poor comment, unless the text around it makes it make
more sense. I'd prefer to see something like:
$x++; # $x is number of users currently logged in, and we have a new o
+ne
Hmm. On re-reading your comment, I can't tell whether you meant
total number of users that have ever logged in, or whether it's a current
count. That's probably why I already flagged it as bad. {grin}
Even better would be to never use $x for something like that:
$current_users++; # we have a new one
That's a lot better.

Posts may use any of the Perl Monks Approved HTML tags. Currently these include the following:
<code> <a> <b> <big>
<blockquote> <br /> <dd>
<dl> <dt> <em> <font>
<h1> <h2> <h3> <h4>
<h5> <h6> <hr /> <i>
<li> <nbsp> <ol> <p>
<small> <strike> <strong>
  <table>
<td> <th> <tr> <tt>
<u> <ul>

Snippets of code should be wrapped in
<code> tags not
<pre> tags. In fact, <pre>
tags should generally be avoided. If they must
be used, extreme care should be
taken to ensure that their contents do not
have long lines (<70 chars), in order to prevent
horizontal scrolling (and possible janitor
intervention).
