hello monks,
i recently wondered why some of my utf8 strings missed their utf8 flag. i found the point where they were used
as arguments to Digest::MD5::md5_hex.
$ perl -wle'
use Digest::MD5 qw(md5_hex);
use Devel::Peek;
use Encode;
my $string = "äöü";
Encode::_utf8_on($string);
Dump $string;
my $md5 = md5_hex($string);
Dump $string

shouldn't the function leave its arguments alone?

Posts may use any of the Perl Monks Approved HTML tags. Currently these include the following:
<code> <a> <b> <big>
<blockquote> <br /> <dd>
<dl> <dt> <em> <font>
<h1> <h2> <h3> <h4>
<h5> <h6> <hr /> <i>
<li> <nbsp> <ol> <p>
<small> <strike> <strong>
  <table>
<td> <th> <tr> <tt>
<u> <ul>
-
Snippets of code should be wrapped in
<code> tags not
<pre> tags. In fact, <pre>
tags should generally be avoided. If they must
be used, extreme care should be
taken to ensure that their contents do not
have long lines (<70 chars), in order to prevent
horizontal scrolling (and possible janitor
intervention).
