There was an idea around for quite a while that Perl could compile with a real C++ compile (VC++ doesn't count, more on this in a moment) for quite some time. However, we were quite wrong. After some heavy lifting, we do have Perl compiling with various C++ compilers, such as g++, Sun CC, HP-UX aCC, and Intel icpc. 5.10.0 and 5.8.9 should have these fixes.

The illusion that we could compile with C++ compilers was pertetuated by compilers such as VC++, Borland C++, and Intel C++. The problem is that these compilers drop into C mode if a file has a .c extension.

Test your modules with bleadperl!

  rsync -avz rsync://public.activestate.com/perl-current/ .
  ./Configure -des -Dusedevel -Dprefix=/path/to/test/perl
  make test
  make install

Now, please test you modules! If you have test failures that don't happen with Perl 5.8.8, send a simplified test case to

Snippets of code should be wrapped in <code> tags not <pre> tags. In fact, <pre> tags should generally be avoided. If they must be used, extreme care should be taken to ensure that their contents do not have long lines (<70 chars), in order to prevent horizontal scrolling (and possible janitor intervention).
