Sorry, I can't use value comparisons to detect the updates. It doesn't matter whether the value changes; it only matters whether the variable was written to.
Good idea though. In most cases, it would probably still work ok. But it won't work in the general case for my application.

Snippets of code should be wrapped in
<code> tags not
<pre> tags. In fact, <pre>
tags should generally be avoided. If they must
be used, extreme care should be
taken to ensure that their contents do not
have long lines (<70 chars), in order to prevent
horizontal scrolling (and possible janitor
intervention).
