I'd like to greatly reduce the space required for it. Remove "New" throughout and the leading and trailing text and blank lines. Move the counts to the head of each section where there is plenty of space for them. Then the navigation would *look* more like this (most of the links in the example below don't go anywhere useful):

4 New Discussions (Top)

Table of Contents in Newest Nodes by demerphq

etc. (note that I didn't include hardly any font and style items for the example, just a quick simulation).

Snippets of code should be wrapped in <code> tags not <pre> tags. In fact, <pre> tags should generally be avoided. If they must be used, extreme care should be taken to ensure that their contents do not have long lines (<70 chars), in order to prevent horizontal scrolling (and possible janitor intervention).
