In the Disadvantages of Perl? meditation I started, I got alot of well thought-out responses saying, among other things, that there is a purpose for every language and a language for every purpose... I think that this applies in this situation because both langs probably have advantages over each other in certain areas.
So to answer your question, I would ask him about specifics. If he is just being a PHP nazi, he won't have anything to say...and if he actually has some reasons, it should be an interesting discussion.

Posts may use any of the Perl Monks Approved HTML tags. Currently these include the following:
<code> <a> <b> <big>
<blockquote> <br /> <dd>
<dl> <dt> <em> <font>
<h1> <h2> <h3> <h4>
<h5> <h6> <hr /> <i>
<li> <nbsp> <ol> <p>
<small> <strike> <strong>
  <table>
<td> <th> <tr> <tt>
<u> <ul>
-
Snippets of code should be wrapped in
<code> tags not
<pre> tags. In fact, <pre>
tags should generally be avoided. If they must
be used, extreme care should be
taken to ensure that their contents do not
have long lines (<70 chars), in order to prevent
horizontal scrolling (and possible janitor
intervention).
