Certain variable definitions – another example is $a, $b in a sort subroutine – have context-specific meanings and lifespan which actually pre-empt all other meanings for that same name. The variables and their values disappear once that particular context is closed. Subsequent references to these names will find that the names now have no value, or that they have reverted to some prior meaning.

<pre> tags. In fact, <pre>
tags should generally be avoided. If they must
be used, extreme care should be
taken to ensure that their contents do not
have long lines (<70 chars), in order to prevent
horizontal scrolling (and possible janitor
intervention).
