You can use an OO approach. Create a subclass of IO::Dir which returns only the files you want. This probably is slightly longer than what you already have, but it separates the special code from your application. (And it would be available for reuse)

<code> tags not
<pre> tags. In fact, <pre>
tags should generally be avoided. If they must
be used, extreme care should be
taken to ensure that their contents do not
have long lines (<70 chars), in order to prevent
horizontal scrolling (and possible janitor
intervention).
