The long winded suggestion I made is easy to understand even if you don't speak Perl and is easy to check. Anything that breaks the obvious one to one visual mapping between the letter and its repeat count is a step backwards for maintainability and easy understanding.

Optimising for fewest key strokes only makes sense transmitting to Pluto or beyond

Snippets of code should be wrapped in <code> tags not <pre> tags. In fact, <pre> tags should generally be avoided. If they must be used, extreme care should be taken to ensure that their contents do not have long lines (<70 chars), in order to prevent horizontal scrolling (and possible janitor intervention).
