Not sure if I understand you, to me it sounds like you're running a query and you get back soo much data that it all doesn't fit on your dos screen.. So to compensate, you drop the char size to try and fit more in.. is that right??
Well, if so, uhmm.. is there any perl involved at all? or are you just running the query from within mysql? If you're dealing with the latter, then you're in the wrong place, try a mysql forum somewhere (or the docs at www.mysql.com).. If you're using Perl, then you can do something like:
$x = 1;
while(@data = $sth->fetchrow_array) {
print join(' ', @data) . "\n";
unless ($x % $max_lines) {
print "\nPress a key to continue.\n";
<STDIN>;
}
$x++;
}
The main thing there is the % (modulous operator) which will return the remainder of $x divided by $maxlines, which is true everytime $x has been incremented $maxlines times, so we get a pause in output as the script waits for you to press enter, allowing you to review what's been printed so far.

Posts may use any of the Perl Monks Approved HTML tags. Currently these include the following:
<code> <a> <b> <big>
<blockquote> <br /> <dd>
<dl> <dt> <em> <font>
<h1> <h2> <h3> <h4>
<h5> <h6> <hr /> <i>
<li> <nbsp> <ol> <p>
<small> <strike> <strong>
  <table>
<td> <th> <tr> <tt>
<u> <ul>
-
Snippets of code should be wrapped in
<code> tags not
<pre> tags. In fact, <pre>
tags should generally be avoided. If they must
be used, extreme care should be
taken to ensure that their contents do not
have long lines (<70 chars), in order to prevent
horizontal scrolling (and possible janitor
intervention).
