It sounds like you are already in a non-standard work situation, and therefore most likely to be able to avoid the kind of compartmentalizing that happens in rigid corporate environments. That's a guess, but I think a reasonable one. It also assumes you will be able to return to your current situation, or a similar one. Absolutely keep in touch with people, forums like this one, trends and tendencies. IOW, everything davido said. Finally, whatever happens, I applaud your choice, and firmly believe you will never regret time invested in your children especially when they are young, no matter how it affects your future career.
