I don't mean to throw water on your fire, but the Walsh only version is a lousy book. The updated edition by the two author team ( who's names escape me, but it's Walsh and someone else ) fixes a LOT of errors in the first.
I've been told to stay away from that first edition.
There is no emoticon for what I'm feeling now.

didn't care for the first version either. Although, for those interested in cheap books, I get mine from bookcloseouts or bookpool

Can you purchase books without back-references?
Don't use perl books for \1 each in a substitution... this behavior is deprecated.
You can also just say: "perl books for @{[ ($var =~ /$regexp/)[0] ]} each".
I mean, come on... I can't be the only one who thought that upon seeing the title of this post, can I?

UPDATE: On second look, the perl kit is from '97 :-(

From chatter box -
tilly says Re perl books for $1 each: I voted -- because I don't like anything that looks like advertising. (Also those CDs, I hope that you aren't trying to copy them for $1 each, violating the copyrights.)
Tilly,
I have no relation with bn.com. Iam just another monk, stumbled on this and wanted to let other perlmonks know. I thought some might be interested.
