Are there any provisions for a monk to change his user id?

Since other people have answered, I'm just going to note a bit of terminology: a monk's ID is the node_id of his homenode. you have an ID of 5403, I have an id of 25047. (This raises the question, why are you asking to change your name 3.25 years later?) The term you wanted was "name". (Title is also approprate, because a user is just another type of node, but that's too easy to confuse with "rank".)

As to the actual answer to your question, it's the same as others have said: ask one of the gods (IE /msg gods Can you change my name to foo?). They're likely to say yes iff:

    • Your new name isn't already taken.
      AND
    • You don't have a significant reputation associated by users with your name. (That is, actual human reputation, not XP.)
      OR
    • Your new name is recognizable by humans as the same person as the old one.

Sort of. I've had mine changed (to my realname) and there are a handful of other precedents (I know of fever and giant) as well, but it has to be done manually by one of the gods. If you ask nicely, you might have yours changed as well.

    Makeshifts last the longest.

Thanks, that's what I thought, but I figured I'd ask in case there was something else I didn't know about. (e.g., "We did it once, but never again" or "Yes, go fill out this form" or something)

The short answer is "Yes". The long answer is "It's discouraged."

See here and here for previous discussions.

If things get any worse, I'll have to ask you to stop helping me.

In case you chose a duff one?

Essentially. When I first joined PerlMonks I just used my last name and all was well and good. Later, when I started using the site more, I realized that I'd like to have the same handle here as I've had on IRC for the last 12 or so years. So, the question stands, is there a way to change ids?

My guess is that you'll be denied. If you wanted to create another account, though, and use that one insteast... that would probably be tolerated.

    -sauoq

What's the difference? Or do you mean that I'll be denied for "PerlJam" because it's already taken by someone else? That's a separate issue. But that's okay as I have another name I'd like (and in fact already "own"). I just want to make sure I can transfer all of the duff stuff to the other name.

Should I send a message to one of the gods directly or is there another forum where I should ask?

        What's the difference?

I meant that I didn't think you'd be allowed to transfer the duff stuff to another name. But, hey, I was just guessing. Given Aristotle's answer, it looks like I'm wrong (or at least that there is a precedent for doing what you ask.)

I hadn't even checked the name PerlJam, but you are right; it's taken. Now, seeing as I know you from IRC as PerlJam, I'm left wondering what your "other name" will be. :-)
