I knew absolutely nothing about PERL before getting this book, and it really gave me a good basic understanding of the language. As much as everyone loves the o'reilly books, I found them to be too wordy for my learning style. This book set me up with a daily plan on how to get into the language.

Usually, the lessons took less than a day each, but it was difficult to get through 3 or more lessons in a day and still retain all of the information.

If you actually use this book daily, it is easy to gain a pretty good hold of the basics in about 2 weeks. you'll understand basic looops, file I/O, regexes, arrays, etc. There is a section that deals with CGI, but I didn't really look at it, so I can't comment on it.

But, that's just my opinion...

I have found a few "21 Days" books to be good reads, Emacs ITOD, Samba ITOD; However, when I first picked up the Perl ITOD, I found many mistates that really threw me off. While the mistakes seemed to be very minor in retrospec, to someone who knew NOTHING of perl, these mistakes were colossal. I'm sure this book has been revised since then, (about one year ago), but I recommend anyone starting fresh with Perl to pickup "Learning Perl" aka "the llama book" which is published by O'Reilly. After reading a few pages from SAMS Teach yourself perl in 21 days, programming perl "camel book", and learning perl "llama book", i found the SAMS book to be the most helpful. The wording was more so for beginners to understand and the examples were simple to understand. The only thing I am not excited about is the syntax used in this book. Some of the example codes are a bit bulky and teach bad syntax styles, but that is just what i believe from reading it. So, I suggest in getting this book and using on O'reilly book as reference.
