hagen has asked for the wisdom of the Perl Monks concerning the following question:

My fellow Monks

SuperSearch has turned up 250327 as the latest and not very satisfying information about DBD-Oracle for Win32 Perl 5.8

Has there been any advance on this?

I've taken a look at brother crazyinsomniac's site at http://crazyinsomniac.perlmonk.org and he has compiled modules for Sybase and others - but no Oracle DBD - should I make a request to him to compile one, or have other Monks been able to overcome the problem in another manner?

Thanks for any advice

hagen

    Three possible solutions:

    1. Jeff Urlwin's ppm repository ftp://ftp.esoftmatic.com/outgoing/DBI
    2. Randy Kobe's ppm repository http://theoryx5.uwinnipeg.ca/ppms/
    3. Just use DBD::ODBC instead

      Alllll Riiiiight!!!

      Thank you, AnonyMonk! - and Jeff Urlwin. I snaffled both DBD-Oracle-1.13-5.8.tar.gz and DBD-ODBC-1.06-5.8.tar.gz just to be sure.

      I checked out Randy Kobe's site too, but he seems to have only the ODBC driver.

      I had considered using ODBC, but all my (known) repositories came up blank for that too.

      I will now ppm repository add Jeff ftp://esoftmatic.com/outgoing/DBI so's not to forget.

      Once again, instant gratification from Perl Monks. Thanks all.

    Another option is to download the .NET SDK. You can then install DBD::Oracle using CPAN.
      Hi! Can you expand on this option? I have the .NET SDK, but I keep on running into errors where it can't find include files (such as windows.h), and I have to add all kinds of things to my path. I'm trying to get a more recent version of DBD::Oracle to work with ActiveState build 635 so that I can use "INSERT ... VALUES ... RETURNING" statements...

        When I wrote this, I had Visual Studio installed. To work with the .NET SDK only, you also need to install the "Platform SDK". A quick Google search finds the Platform SDK at http://www.microsoft.com/msdownload/platformsdk/sdkupdate/ . The Microsoft site, of course, is picky about using IE, so use it to access this site.
