slightly OT: Translators wanted for pVoice

Being slightly Off Topic here, I thought it would in any case be a good place to look for help.

Many of you have heard about my project called pVoice. Either from the recent Perl.com article, or before by reading pVoice 0.01 or pVoice here on Perlmonks. Some may even have visited my pVoice website.

The upcoming release of pVoice will become available in many languages, thanks to lots of helpful translators. However, I think that it's good to have pVoice available in as many languages as possible. Currently I've found people willing to translate into English, Dutch, German, French, Spanish, Italian, Croatian, Danish, Swedish, Norwegian (Norsk Bokmål and Ny Norsk), Finnish, Turkish, Brazilian Portuguese, Traditional Chinese and Simplified Chinese.

If your mothertongue is another language than listed here, and you would like to help by translating pVoice, please drop me a note (jouke@pvoice.org).

Translating pVoice consists of two parts: first of all there is a Gettext .po file to translate (with a little more than 50 entries). If you don't know how to handle .po files, you can just use poEdit to make the translations.
Second, there is a small set of HTML files that represent the helpinformation. That will be some more work, quite a bit more text.
I need both, so if you think you could handle the .po file but not the HTML, I would get only a half translation...

I can provide Russian text, and 50 words is quite small enough ammount. I hope HTML translation is not much bigger, so I could take this as well. Courage, the Cowardly Dog things, I do for love to perl...	[reply]

I can provide Hebrew translation, but I have a few questions first: How are the files encoded (UTF, ISO-8859-x, etc) ? Is the translation done phonetically or to the other language's own script? If I'm reading that right, the labels on the buttons contain the same text you pass to the speech engine? Does that actualy produce correct-sounding results? Warning: Unless otherwise stated, code is untested. Do not use without understanding. Code is posted in the hopes it is useful, but without warranty. What I remember from Jouke's demo at the Perl Mongers Amsterdam meeting last month, was that the text on the button is the default phonetic string passed to the speech synthesizer, but that you can override it. This was e.g. particularly needed for Jouke's name, which is pronounced "jauwku" rather than "jooki" (hope I got that right ;-). The quality of speech is actually very dependent on the speech synthesizer used. We heard some examples from very hard to understand, to a Flemish speakng female voice that was hard to differentiate from real. Liz	[reply]

Indeed, like liz already explained (but I would just like to confirm it here): the text you see on the buttons are the default text that is fed to the speech synthesizer. You can however also enter a 'phonetical text', which you can enter in any way you like to make it sound right. This is not always needed. The BrightSpeech synthesizer liz mentioned (the Flemish speaking female) has a phonetical lexicon which you can feed, so you don't need to enter a specifical phonetical text.
