Look at Tie::File, from dominus for inspiration (or just use it!). Tie::File has more than a few clever tricks up it's sleeve, including partial rewrites and deferred writes, which is probably what you want to do. If the information in this post is inaccurate, or just plain wrong, don't just downvote - please post explaining what's wrong.
