tarballed has asked for the wisdom of the Perl Monks concerning the following question:

Hello Everyone. Im having a problem installing some perl modules using perl -MCPAN.

I was trying to install Archive::Zip and received this error:

Writing Makefile for Archive::Zip
Makefile:88: *** missing separator. Stop.
/usr/bin/make -- NOT OK
Running make test
Can't test without successful make
Running make install
make had returned bad status, install seems impossible

Also, i've run into this error when trying to install Compress::Zlib
make: *** Zlib.o Error 1
/usr/bin/make -- NOT OK
Running make test

This has happened on a few perl modules that I need to install on a server at work.

Anyone have any idea on what the prob could be and how I can fix this? The machine is a RH 9.0 box.

Also, what is the command to rerun the setup for -MCPAN? Maybe I missed something in the setup?

Two Super Search clues here. RH 9.0 and *** missing separator. Take a look at make 'missing separator' error when building CPAN modules on RedHat 8/9 and Re: Time::Hires installation under RH Linux 9.0 for explainations. Short form is that you need to edit your /etc/sysconfig/i18n file and change the line that looks like: LANG="en_US.UTF-8" to: LANG="en_US" FWIW my /etc/sysconfig/i18n looks like: `LANG="en_US" SUPPORTED="en_US.UTF-8:en_US:en" SYSFONT="latarcyrheb-sun16"` [download] HTH Daeve	[reply] [d/l]

And to reinitialize CPAN, at the CPAN prompt type `o conf init` HTH	[reply] [d/l]
