Useless Statistics

Just for recreational curiosity. Data fetched from BigMonkMap and PerlMonks, as of 7/16/2003. Only monks on the Map were included, so it's a self-selected sample, not a good random sampling. Not sure if the statistics already available somewhere but here they are anyway.

  • Region A: longitude180W - 30W, i.e. Americas, etc.
  • Region B: longitude 30W - 60E, i.e. Europe, Africa, Middle East, etc.
  • Region C: longitude 60E - 180E, i.e. Asia, Oceania, etc.

... you still get the same mature experienced monks (mature for programmers, that is, many of whom would probably have exhausted to death by 40).

Just for the fun of it. (Region C has too small a sample size.)

Hello, my name is Alex, and I love statistics -- father and grandfather were both actuaries.

I'm an Aries in Region A, and I was wondering if we could see some standard deviations. The median is cool, but that's just the (n/2)th entry in the sorted list (or the average of (n/2) and ((n+1)/2) if there are an even number of entries) -- I'd also like to get an idea of the shape of the curve (kurtosis: +ve or -ve?) as well as the size of the standard deviation.

The other thought that occurred to me was wondering about what kind of groups we'd get if we did some kind of nearest-neighbour exercise based on a mix of age and distance. Try for different sized groups, also find the most isolated monks .. the possiblities for wasting time are almost endless.

Of course I've seen the quote. Didn't realize that brother Ozymandias wrote that -- a very cool name, and I thought of the Shelley poem as soon as I saw the name. Fourteen lines of bitter irony .. 'Look upon my works, ye mighty, and despair!' .. quite brilliant.

And it was Shelley's wife who wrote Dr. Frankenstein .. I wonder if there was any thematic crossover there at all.

Way cool... I was unaware of the MonkMap and stats.

I would guess that this is probably a statistically skewed sample, however, as only more experienced monks are likely to have heard of the MonkMap, or decided to add themselves to it (like I just did).

I myself knew of it for a long time, but never knew how to add myself to it. Turns out, all you need to do is go to the Help page.

Here are maps of the distribution of monks in N. America and Europe grouped by XP (XP => 2300 & XP < 2300), in case anyone interested.

How about getting an account out on http://www.perlmonk.org and having this stuff regularly updated?

BTW, did you use a utility to generate your tables? If so, which one?

    Cheers,
    Matt

No I didn't use any special utility to generate the tables. There're plenty of Javascript barcharts out there though.
