Mago,
My native language is English, but that's not why I am replying. My recollection of the Tower of Babel referred to a period of time in Genesis where all the people in the land spoke the same language and were constructing a tower that almost reached Heaven. God spread the people out to all the lands given them different languages so that never again would humans reach that close by working together. I guess the "mess" after the breakup aligns with your reference, but please correct me if I am wrong.

Native: English (British Spelling)
Near Native: Scottish Gaelic (an endangered minority language spoken only by <80,000 people, now becoming extinct)
Good: French
Basic: German, Russian (though I've forgotten most of the latter now)
It's one of my life ambitions to learn how to speak four or five languages fluently, although I've never got round to studying any Italian (which is to be my fifth language).

Define "native language" :-)
I was born in Sweden, have German father, grew up in Switzerland (the French-speaking part) and learned English as my fourth language.
My native language is Swedish and German, but I speak (and write) French and English better than my "native" language(s).

Hi Mago,
It might be more interesting to ask what other languages the Monks speak/read/write and how well. I suggest the following scale:
- Native: Well, your mother tongue
- Near-Native: Very few errors, passes as a native with non-natives
- Good: No too many mistakes
- Fluent: Has no trouble communicating any idea
- Basic: Can get the gist of most conversations
I suggest this because the information might be useful for i18n efforts.
And in this spirit:
- Native: North American English
- Near-Native: German, French, English English ;)
- Good: Spanish, Italian
- Fluent: Portuguese, Catalan
- Basic: Dutch
Yes, I know. A lot of you have looked at my code and must have wondered what I was doing with all my time because I certainly wasn't learning Perl. Now you know I'm a bit of a tart when it comes to languages. ;)

Hi Mago,
My native tongue is English, however... I'll have a go at:
- French (Vocabulary good, but writing skills erm... bad)
- German (See above)

- Native: Czech
- Good: English, Slovak (it's so close to Czech that it almost isn't a language, but a dialect (I just succeeded to enrage all Slovaks around ;-))
- Poor: Russian (ja nepomnju bukvy)
You should ask me about programming languages ...

My native language is (American) English, but I speak enough Japanese,
French, and German to be able to get around in most areas of those countries.
And I can usually understand some Spanish here and there because it's
so similar to French.
I'm currently studying (British) English since I find it
fascinating and want to be able to impress/confuse all my friends
(and better understand Monty Python's Flying Circus).

- Native: Armenian
- Near-native: Persian, English
(though I probably write English best)
- Reading: German
- Vaguely familiar: French, Spanish

My native language is Swedish, and I'd say "good" to "near-native" in English - I'm not sure if it is for me to judge. :)
I understand written and spoken Norwegian pretty ok (I think), and I can probably read some not too complicated Danish - both are not *that* different from Swedish. I couldn't make myself understood in either though. :)
I studied some German a lot of years back, and at gunpoint I might be able to communicate a little, while reading it ranges from "No problemo!" to "Huh?", depending on the text and probably the subject. Same probably goes for listening to it, though I rarely have the opportunity.
And oh, I think I know a few cooking terms in finnish, such as saying "sausages with fried potatoes". Lol. "Makkara ja paistettu peruna"? Never mind the spelling, it was years and years ago, when I worked as a chef at a place that had a lot of finnish truck drivers stopping by. :)
