I think it comes down to one thing: tolorance. Or perhaps more proactively(*): an intolorance of intolorance. Perhaps coupled with the single-minded focus and swift but lightly exercised use of managerial control. Perhaps the remarkable thing is that these two things are often mutually exclusive. That they coexist here is something that requires more than my abilities to try and explain.
