At work, I have set $ENV{HTTP_PROXY} to http://login:password@proxyserver, and it magically works : 

use strict;
use WWW::Mechanize;
my $agent = WWW::Mechanize->new();
$agent->env_proxy();
$agent->get('http://www.google.com');
print $agent->content;
