I'd recommend either Python (for those who love scripting languages) or basic C++ (ignore the STL, exceptions, etc, at first...I don't like them anyway).
Java reminds me of Ent-speak, and Perl really...well...it's very different... things can be said better w/o making Perl objects 95% of the time. Edit by tye, title, P
