Suggested Reading List

I think we should have a node in either the tutorials or library nodes with a suggested reading list.

I know that our library has most of the good docs, but not many beginners know that they should read them. If we post a "Suggested Reading List", we will be able to give someone a reference point from which to ask follow-up questions.

It gets frustrating to say "RTFM" when the "FM" has all of the right answers, but no newbies know to go there.

Any other thoughts? I know that any aspiring perl person should know to read these, but sometimes, someone has to be told.

We could also consider challenges to new monks. If a new monk has read the suggested reading, and they can answer a few short questions about the reading and perl in general, we can allow them to go to 3rd level or something. Just a random thought. . .

You're right, also with quite a high visibility, i.e easy to find.

I was about to respond to a recent post about POD with a RTFM style response but couldnt find the FM myself to conclude the post so gave up.

A quick list of doc sources akin to the perlfaq posting on c.l.p.m may divert some of the newer people to the docs, which the more experienced can just ignore

The FM you probably wanted is "perldoc perlpod".

I think this is an excellent idea. While perldoc can be really helpful, there's no substitute for a good book. A lot of perl newbies probably aren't aware of the godsend called Oreilly press. This might intersect somewhat with the reviews section, but I think it would also be useful for links to online articles, (there are a few good ones, like coping with scoping).

I haven't seen any Quests posted since I joined perlmonks, maybe it's time for one. I don't think its entirely clear whether this overlaps too much with other nodes we already have, and i think its also unclear exactly what the format of such a node should be.

    Anyway, just my .02
