in reply to why i may have to leave perl...

Aw man, I'm dealing with the same thing. I'm working on an application that will be deployed organization wide. There are only 2 Perl programmers here. One of which is myself, the other is a recent convert. I could do the app in Delphi, Visual Basic, Visual C++, Java, but I want to use my Perl and it's my call what gets used but I have to take other issues into consideration, code maintenance being first and foremost. I love my Perl and I'll be loath to use anything else at this point. The other perl programmer has just picked up the language about 3 weeks ago and he's becoming a fanatic. I guess I'll just have to set some guidelines for code maintenance and start the process of evangelizing and get some converts into the fold. Thanks for the post eduardo.
