fglock has asked for the wisdom of the Perl Monks concerning the following question:

Do you know where I can find a mp3 or wav file for the word "Perl", that I could use on a non-english Perl site?

I could only find one for Postgresql :)

Look up "pearl" in an online dictionary which offers pronunciations. Here is the American Heritage dictionary's listing, complete with .wav file, as provided via Bartleby.com.

    http://www.bartleby.com/61/51/P0135100.html

Regarding copyright, I'd call this fair use as it's not copying a significant fraction of the whole dictionary. Even then, I would attribute the source.

Thanks. I'm trying to retrieve the file - the site redirects to some kind of advertising page, that's being filtered out by our firewall proxy.

I'm negotiating it with my sysadmin...

    hah, yes.
someone should bug Larry for a sound file of him saying "Hello, this is Larry Wall and I pronounce perl 'perl'."
That would be good, kinda like Linus' recording of Linux.

btw, In his Finnish/Swedish accent it is like lee'-nooks.

I don't know of one, but I'm sure you could get a recording of someone saying "python" and then someone else saying "Earl" and splice them together. That's the way that I would go. Of course, if you have a microphone you could just do it yourself in about 3/4 of a second.

Maybe you can't tell from my accent, but I'm not a native english speaker myself :)

update: Actually, I never heard it, so I don't know how to say it.

    Hi,

in Larry Walls "Camel Lot #6"-talk (perl6) you can hear "Master's voice" saying the word "perl" at 16 min 00 sec, 16 min 07 sec and 16 min 11 sec. But don't be disappointed ... it's rather short ;-)
