On being a community

Welcome to the world of expanding online communities!
Seriously, as Perl gets used by ever-increasing diverse communities, more opinions will be formed with less information, and from more varied viewpoints. As these opinions clash, you'll get discussion, sometimes heated outbursts.
The result is usually a healthy exchange of viewpoints, and an occasional flame war.
I don't see anything wrong with that. I've lobbed as many grenades over the years as have been lobbed at me. Sometimes I even manage to do it politely. {grin}
But the result is usually that the individual darkness is overcome by the shared light (with a varying amount of heat, depending on the chemical reaction). That's a good thing.
The craft of programming is a community event. I welcome The Monastery as a place to hold those community events. In fact, in my nearly 30 years of being online, this is one of the best.

I've noticed increased hostility lately here... can't we all just get along?
Labeling this a "we" problem doesn't help much. It tars everyone--including the majority who are getting along just fine--with the same brush, and it spreads the responsibility so thinly that nobody is responsible.
In most communities (including many companies) there are a few people like to rile things up, either out of boredom or out of an inability to handle other frustrations in their life, and there are people who like to react. While they're going at it, normal discourse gets drowned out. Eventually, the fire burns out, and things go back to normal for a while. The best advice in the meantime is to advise people to take deep breath before posting, and to avoid the temptation to feed the trolls.

roger on the we part... it just seemed recently that a bunch of flame war type posts were being front paged... which I'm not sure is a good thing... (I generally only read through a few front paged items, then on to new cpan modules, then sign off and do real work, so my experience recently may have been a bit biased...)

that's true. You have a good point. But, I think it's normal and very natural for situations to arise every once in awhile. I mean, we're all of different personalities - all have different tastes and different opinions. It's bound to upset someone now and again. If it didn't, I'd be very suprrised.
This community actually has done very well to keep posts on topic and whatnot. I'm actually very impressed with it. I think it's the way it handles considerations and whatnot. If something really bothers you, just ignore it. I'm sure that if it's quite offensive that NodeReaper will take care of it. :> | [reply] |

We had several flamewars incited by Anonymonks recently (maybe that shouldn't even be a plural - we'll never know). But I saw hardly any registered users getting out of line in these threads, and really no noticeable increase of hostility outside their confines.
So are you referring to the three or so flames we had, or to the general tone at the monastery? It would help if you clarify.
If you're referring to those trolls, then the best thing to remember is just not to feed them.
If not, I'd be interested in more specific observations.
Makeshifts last the longest.

I'm fairly new to the monestary and over the last couple weeks I have been lurking around and learning more as I go. I am going to have argue hat heated discussions are good as long as you stick to the code and process and you don't attack anybody personally, and people should not take offense to these discussions personaly because it's about the code and not about the person or their personality. A heated discussion can actually make someone think a little bit differently about a problem and some learning will usually come out as a result even if the parties still end up disagreeing. The Unix/Perl philisophy has always been there are more than one way to do something. Just my 2 cents, you don't have to agree and I respect that.

Yeah... my stress level this week has been at 110% (+ bad weather this whole month... avi) so that could have something to do with it... just wish that some times people don't comment on conversations that have happened in the past in the monestary... (eg: the holy wars)... Just my $0.02 again. Cheers.
