NodeID included in Title

by AcidHawk (Vicar)
on Feb 07, 2003 at 09:47 UTC ( [id://233416]=monkdiscuss: print w/replies, xml ) Need Help??

This problem is that if I have a node open I don't know what it's ID is. When I have found an older node that answers a new question I think it would be prudent to reference that answering node as opposed to creating another almost duplicate node and I have difficulty finding the node ID as it is not listed. I have to go back to the previous page a look for the URL that links to it.

Could we get the NodeID displayed in front of the node title. Something like ...

This would make it far easier when answering questions with results found in Super Search or for e.g. pointing to a node (you may have open in another window) in the ChatterBox. We could immediately identify what should go into the [id://]field.

Kanji correctly points you to New Feature Announcement: Custom Node Title Definition, but besides that, every node has a pair of ( print, xml ) links at the top, next to the title, which contain the node_id, so the information is already there, you just have to get it from yer browser (a mouseover ought to reveal the url).

This might be useful on super search, but as a general addition to all node links I would say no. It would take up too much space and make things too hard to read for my tastes.

How about adding the node id as the title attribute of the link? That way it would appear when you hover the mouse over it in many browsers.

Personally, I just stick the mouse over the link and look at the node id that's shown in the URL on the status bar :-)

I want to have the node ID and the node type (and, for replies, the node type of the root node) in the "subtitle" area where the author and date information currently appears. Unfortunately, doing this nicely requires moving code between parts [ and building a list of "friendly names" for node types (similar to what Super Search uses) etc... ]
