Run, don't walk, to pick up Steve McBreen's Software Craftsmanship. Then, become a craftsman, not an engineer. :) Seriously, the best way to become a better programmer is to find a mentor who's a good programmer. After that, read as much good code as you can. After that, read as many good books as you can. (The Pragmatic Programmer is another good place to start.)
