Another way to uniquely ID him or her is to put a GUID in the query string that is passed on every request. May or may not be easy to set up. Can be obscured (no tampering) and not as easily removed (there's a button in most browsers to "remove cookies"). This just occurred to me after seeing that zengargoyle uses Opera (see link above).
