Hi Monks

Does anyone know of a binary build of Dave Roth's Win32::AdminMisc for Active State Perl 5.8.0?

As you know, I have a 5.8 repository at http://crazyinsomniac.perlmonk.org/perl/ppm/5.8, and I take requests (need a ppm of a module, I'll see what I can do), but I'm sad to say that I cannot make Win32::AdminMisc available, mostly cause the roth guys don't know how to make a CPAN distribution. If i have more time later, I may give it a shot, but in the meantime, you should have a go at contacting the roth people.

I was told he does not have the time to keep things up anymore. However, he does provide the source on his site. You could do it.

However, the module should still work since the mod date on the zip file was 2000.

Have you stumbled on a bug?

Not a bug, but as the ActiveState Perl ChangeLog explains ...

This build corresponds to the Perl 5.8.0 source code release.

The 800 series builds of ActivePerl are not binary compatible with builds in the 500 or 600 series. Any extensions built using binaries from the ActivePerl 500 or 600 series will need to be recompiled. Note especially that this applies to PPM packages that may have been built for 500 or 600 series builds.

Actually, I did download the sources and tried to build from them, but some tweaking of build settings is needed, as a minimum. If I succeed in building it, where would you suggest to place the module for others to use? Send it to Dave Roth? Perlmonks? Other?

After a lot of munching the project settings I succeeded to compile Win32::AdminMisc with ActivePerl 5.8 (804). It seems to work fine mostly, but it crashed in the DESKTOP.pl example. I do not feel very confident about that build, but if you must you can install it from my repository at http://Jenda.Krynicky.cz/perl.

If there's anyone who has the time and skills to compile the module properly and sends me the DLL I'll pack it for PPM and upload it to my repository.

      Hi Jenda

I tried to tweak the AdminMisc.dsp settings - directory paths and include paths, and I hit the problem of missing Win32Perl.h file. A file of that name, by Dave Roth, is found in a couple of his modules on CPAN. Did you follow this route?

I would like to build the module myself (with MSVC 6.0) and try to investigate the crash that you reported. Are the sources of AdminMisc as tweaked by you available on your site?

      Rudif

Well you can get it from here. Basicaly all I did is I tweaked the paths and filenames, moved the Admin.h and Win32Perl.h from ./include to . and added a 5.8 section into Win32Perl.h.

Please let me know if you succeed with the debuging.

        Jenda

P.S.: I'll mail Dave Roth later today. He should know we are playing with his stuff :-)
