From what I've read of the Apocalypse and Exegesis series (which, admittedly, was only the first few a long time ago), I think some of the 'punctuation' changes you talk about were being made because of ambiguities in the perl5 syntax. Certainly, any change that allows the programmer to get his wishes across to the compiler with less confusion can't be all bad.
