beretboy has asked for the wisdom of the Perl Monks concerning the following question:

Since I've started writing perl I have dreamed of writing and testing code on my PDA, but alas this has not been a reality with my palm m100 (see "palm perl porting, problems?"). But I have recently aquired a Psion Revo (waiting for it to arrive), and I have heard about a port of perl to this interesting platform. And I ask my fellow monks if anyone out there know anything about it or has tried it. Is it full fledged perl, is it just perl-like, is it a hoax? The file size of the executable is 3mb or so and I can't imagine how they could fit perl into 3mb. Any feedback would be appreciated.

I quickly downloaded the perl for psion file (Ah, the benefits of broadband access) and it seems genuine. Sadly I cannot run it as:

    1. I have no Psion 5 (only Psion 3)
    2. PsiWin is not installed on my Windows XP machine

I suspect that it probably does not include all modules which are normally included with a standard Perl installation.

I used it for a while on my Psion 5 a couple of years ago. It appeared to be fully functional (except that the list of supported packages was "short"). However I never really made good use of it because I had to launch all Perl scripts from the shell, and EPOC doesn't really work well that way (for me).

For me OPL (the Psion's in-built BASIC varient) with Macro5 provided a far better was to add extra facilities to EPOC. The integration with the rest of the system was better, and it was easier to develop scripts on the Psion itself (rather than needing a PC).

This was a few years ago however, if there is a better Perl on the Psion then I would be interested.

PS: I do make extensive use of the Perl Ref Guide on the Psion, I can't remember where I got it from (I thought it was here but I can't see it.

It seems there is now a beter integration for PERL within EPOC (with cute camels as icons for Perl-scripts)
