Check out OpenThought. It's a Web Application Environment which allows the browser and server to interact in the background, you don't need to reload the page.

One of OpenThought's features is that it can dynamically change existing HTML code. That, in combination with JavaScript's setTimeout() method should do what you're looking for. Just use setTimeout to call OpenThought's callUrl() JavaScript method, which will talk to the server in the background, and would allow you to perform the updates you are looking for.
