(Fade to my recent interview of a candidate ...)
CANDIDATE: How many people work here?
ME: About half, which is a pretty high percentage.

My school 'employs' between 3 and 4k students presently (a bit large considering it was built for 800...), which is reasonably sizeable for it being a High School.

pigeons! Well, okay, I don't really work for Google, but that's what popped into my head when I saw this poll.

I work for $BIG_COMPANY but the actual office I work in only has about 20 people so we have that $small_company feel about us.

I agree, Vek has a point...
It makes a big difference if you're in a large centralised company where everyone has the same job, more or less. Or you're in a small, relatively independent department.
I'm with a company of slightly over 200 emps, however, most of these are callcenter and ops people, while in my department we are with only 12 developers. So yes, I really should have voted for the second option methinks! --

My consulting company works for big companies, so whenever I fill out the free industry rag subscription forms I was claim all of my client's employees, yearly budgets, etc. On our own however, we've never really been able to get past the 27 person mark. It's a crazy market. | [reply] |

Smallish department, largish university. The total number of people that I have to deal with is probably under 100, but there are more than 10,000 employees in the system and 40,000 students, with some crossover between the groups.

The best person you can work for is yourself. I like being self-employed because I can dictate my schedule and determine when and how often I can go on vacation each year. Normal jobs don't allow you to do that. | [reply] |

I voted on this shortly after it's posting, and then got pulled away before I could post.
Lear Corp. employs 25k+ "Knowledge Workers" (if you've read any of "Drama" series, you'll understand why I can't even type that without a sardonic chuckle) which denotes them as someone with a login on one of our domains (count your M$ liscenses and there's your knowledge-orker pool, I suppose - fitting). On top of that, we employ an uncounted number of plant workers and staff (Well, I'm sure HR counts them, but it's their job, isn't it?).

*AMEN*
The externally facing website is handled by the Corporate Communications Dept (Read: Out-sourced by them to some "Professional Firm") Rather than by the intranet development group (which has technologically savvy web designers and applications programers on staff and in house to help with HTML and web technology needs)
*Sigh* Why must we fight these battles every day?

If this poll had come out last week, I would have been able to say '1' since I was an independent consultant .. but last week I started a full-time job using RH Linux, Perl and Apache. Very cool stuff.
And it's very cool to be working in an office environment again instead of having just two cats (one geriatric) for company.

Ok, how many people here actually *own* a company... I mean, the word "my" is possesive... :P
I actually do own my own company, with about 7 employees. Being the boss can be fun, but it also takes a *lot* of time. Let's not even mention my personal life. :( | [reply] |

Hi Guys,
I am new to this site and so far I think it is great! This is a great poll; it helps to learn more about your culture and a little more about who I am talking to. If everything else is just half as good as I've seen so far then this is still an excellent site! Well bye guys, feel free to /msg me or talk to me in the Chatter Box.

Well over the 10K mark.
I think there are over 1K on site, and we have offices all over the world. So yeah, many many people working on many many many projects.
I get to write software tools in perl for the developers of a large project(500K lines of Ada source, 10K of C, and several thousand lines of perl).
I'm just upset I missed the support job in Japan.

And I'm one of them otherwise I'd be working elsewhere. Why else would we work long and hard only to remain at or below the poverty level?
