200,000 nodes

by blakem (Monsignor)
on Sep 13, 2002 at 07:47 UTC ( [id://197466]=monkdiscuss: print w/replies, xml ) Need Help??

Perlmonks is quickly approaching node #200,000. In the spirit of PerlMonks Deadpool I'd like to continue the tradition with a repeat contest.

It's simple really. Guess what the timestamp on node 200,000 will be.

IMPORTANT UPDATE: The entry deadline has now (GMTime: Tue Sep 17 22:10:15 2002) passed. No more guesses will be accepted. Better luck next time.

  • Times are in Eastern, the same as shown on the nodes themselves.
  • Closest one in absolute time wins. (10 seconds late is better than 3 minutes early)
  • Once we reach node 198500 no more entries will be accepted.
  • My original node cache will be used to verify all entries (to discourage creative editing of entries)
  • If something screwy happens like antivroom, then the first "normal" node above 200K will be used instead. The definition of "normal" is at my discretion. (For those that weren't around at the time, read the deadpool thread above)

So, just to get this started here is my entry:

Node 200,000 will be posted on Mon Sep 23 06:57:23 2002

Timezone on nodes is configurable :)
But I reckon 2,000,000 will be posted on Sat 21st Sep 18:00
Updated: I actually meant 200,000, I had the beer goggles on, and couldn't read ;p

      Timezone on nodes is configurable
If it is, I haven't been able to get it working correctly... They always seem to correspond to the America/New_York timezone for me. In tye's latest report it looks like they should be configurable, but are still somewhat broken.

Anyway, we'll use America/New_York (i.e. localtime on the perlmonks server) as our metric.

Update: Ok, I see it now. If you pick a timezone such as GMT+0 the node timestamp does change... If you use the Timezone Settings to set your preference the timestamp defaults to the servers localtime.

However, the createtime field in the xml feed is not affected by your user settings, so perhaps it should be the definitive time for our purposes.

      -Blake

Ok, how about we call it Mostly configurable then ;p

Ach, I was going to do something really scientific and study the daily, weekly and monthly variations and come up with a great guess .. but I'll just roll the dice go with Mon Sep 23 20:30:00 which will be right in the middle of my Monday night chorus rehearsal.

That last time I took part in a pool like this we (the regulars of the CANOPUS form on CompuServe) were guessing the release date of Windows 95. That was pretty funny. :)

My guess is 20 September 2002 6:55 AM (which is basically the time in EST when I'm 24 years old).

September 20th is a good bet, since I too will be 24 on that day. I'd have to confer with my parents for the time I was born but I think it's early in the morning sometime.
Yeah, I know... Your bday tag showed. I was born at about 5 to 1 PM CET so that makes about 5 hours back in EST (I hope), making it 6:55 AM.
BTW I have proof my mom was in Belgium that day, giving birth to me. Well, at least if Mom is her REAL name. :-)

Anyone else here born September 20?

Wow! With 63 entrants this contest has been more popular than I had expected. Now that we've reached the 198,500th node the poll is closed. No more entrants will be accepted. Here is the official list. Let me know if I've made any cut'n'paste errors:

That's not really fair, because Anonymous monk has entered three (ups!) two times! ;)

Seriously though, what if Anonymous monk wins? Will the runner-up be getting the prize, or will the prize be given to noone? (it could be put into a special prize fund for later contests ;)

The anonymonk ballots don't really count.... The prize will be given to the closest pseudonymous monk on the list.

I'm wondering if there's a bunch of pre-written nodes waiting in the wings of watchdog scripts, in the hopes of quickly nodesteading as soon as they notice count 199,999!

Perhaps the gods can report on whether system load leaps around that time.

How did I come around to getting this date? Simple! The Sun at the centre of our solar system will suddenly flare up with an attitude and create many abnormalities in the Earth's atmosphere. All computerized equipment on the planet will cease to function for a period of nearly 5 weeks until the frenzy caused by the Sun is over. At this point in time, all computer equipment will jump into a functioning state once again and people will once again commence to post on the site. :)

Gah! That should've been non-anonymous, of course. So, here we go again: The 200,000th node will be posted on Sun Sep 22 16:23:42 2002. -- mowgli

    My guess Sun Sep 22 23:14:41 2002.

I found a flaw in my data, so revised estimate (within 10 mins of the original):

    198,500th Tue Sep 17 19:36:08 2002 200,000th Mon Sep 23 18:30:04 2002

Well It's better than the Abottoire, but Yorkshire!

In the spirit of the dumbest people to ever land on The Price is Right, I'll vote for:
    Mon Sep 23 06:57:22 2002

Man, which part of "without going over" are these people confused by?

(wth is "Eastern"? here's me hoping that's EST...)

      1032348841 (Wed Sep 18 06:34:01 2002 EST)

Sorry about the anonymous post, for some reason I'm being logged out after hitting submit. (And no, I still don't know what "Eastern" is...)

By "Eastern" I meant EST or EDT depending on what daylight savings happens to be at the time. Since we switch from one to the other next month, I didn't want to specify... America/New_York is probably a better term for what I intended.
