My last place of work had a rather long case study,
followed by a fairly short interview (which didn't focus as
much on programming capability). It seemed to work well;
I never had a co-worker, hired under this system, who wasn't
up to par. They tried to saddle the candidate with an
unfamiliar language and several straightforward problems,
but letting them use the language of their choice and making
the problems a bit harder might work just as well.
