I prefer a system which enumerates their transgressions.
- Doesn't read the manual.
- Doesn't post the error message.
- Doesn't post code, or posts the wrong code.
- Complains about XP.
- Needs a good beating/Refuses to use modules.
- Parses HTML/XML with regular expressions.
- Spells Perl with a 3.
- Uses a hand-rolled CGI parser.
- Probably should be using Python, Java, or C++.
- Probably should be using VB.

We may need someone more skilled in the nomenclature to assemble a negative (dark side?) heirarchy for the fallen.Anybody have a list spanning from just below initiate on down to ... (anti-saint|whatever)? Might it include titles like Fallen, sinner and/or possessed? Will we need to create our own definition of evil as opposed to existing ones? Will the release of 6.0 inspire us on crusades to crush or convert the heathens, or should we leave that to the laity? Regardless, we should never forget our own guidance. I'd think "Fallen" would be about right for level -10
(Fallen Angels, etc). How's this for new levels?
Level | Title |
-1 | Unbeliever |
-2 | Offender |
-3 | Sinner |
-4 | Transgressor |
-5 | Heretic |
-6 | Infidel |
-7 | Blasphemer |
-8 | Idolator |
-9 | Heresiarch |
-10 | Fallen |
The trick is ordering the severity of things like
blasphemy, idolatry, heresy, and so on.

Well, ++ for effort, but your proposed names would need some reconsideration. Problem is that "unbeliever" and "infidel" are synonyms; as are "offender", "sinner", and "transgressor"; as are "heretic" and "blasphemer". "Fallen" refers to pretty much everybody.
I would propose a taxonomy with fewer levels. How about
Level | Title |
-1 | Benighted |
-2 | Sinner |
-3 | Excommunicant |
-4 | Witch |
-4 | Troll |
Hmmmm... A Possible down-side to this whole idea is that it gives persons of a certain anti-social inclination something to strive for. In effect, it rewards undesirable behavior.
Maybe what we need is something like:
Level | Title |
-1 | Penitent |
-2 | Excommunicant |

I'd vote to replace 'Offender' with 'daemon' ;)

This only serves to promote negative XP. I can see people creating accounts with the intention of reaching these levels. This is something we should avoid.

Upon reading the title I thought that this was a level 11, as in one better than Saint. Recall that many intellectuals and religious luminaries have been deemed 'heretical' by the establishment in their lifetimes, but whose work turned out to be revolutionary and highly foundational to the history that followed.
Ovid has certainly made controversial but well-regarded posts (Paradigm Shift - Don't use strict), and TheDamian's mind-blowing talk at SPUG last night on computations "in no time" clearly puts him in that category!

Hehe bronto
I won't vote for this one ;-) becouse I don't really know which one to choose; ++ for the idea, or -- for you to be the first heretic round here :-) (smile, you're in candid camera) ;->
Anyway this idea seems resonable, but... (yes, I know... there is always some 'but') i wonder (and fear to ask), what would happen if somebody has implemented this idea here, at PerlMonks. I'm sure, that there would be at least a few people, that would be glad to be the first 'Heretics' ;-) listed almost the same way as Saints.
I'm sure that we would be flooded with huge amounts of nodes written by people waiting for --
Then maybe we should call a heretic somebody, who always codes his own solutions... and not even one line of his/her code would be found in any of 'Perl related' publication (books, etc.). So being called a code heretic by other monks here would be a honor... but that's only my very very hubmle oppinion :-)
Have fun! Greetz, Tom. | [reply] |

It's 100% sure you can't be less that a few negative points
unless you're really trying to be annoying, but if you're trying to be annoying
you'll be just be locked for ever ever, and anyway no XP
less than -20 I can imagine!
So, no need for heretical levels, I guess.
But, considering you just did a really funny joke on a subject, I
++-ed all nodes under your node without a reading.
I know, that is not very good, but I have not much time --
I'm in a way writing new offencive node in PMD, so I just tried to
save my time and waste yourth.

Really?
Being right, does not endow the right to be rude; politeness costs nothing. Being unknowing, is not the same as being stupid. Expressing a contrary opinion, whether to the individual or the group, is more often a sign of deeper thought than of cantankerous belligerence. Do not mistake your goals as the only goals; your opinion as the only opinion; your confidence as correctness. Saying you know better is not the same as explaining you know better.
