Call for donations and sponsorship

If you hadn't heard already, the Perl Foundation development grants for 2002, awarded to Larry Wall, Dan Sugalski, and Damian Conway have not been able to complete funding. The goal was to obtain $240,000, and the current total stands a little over half that amount.

Damian's grant ended at the end of June, and Dan's will end at the end of July. Neither will be extended. The plan for the remaining funds is to bring in a professional grant writer, and anything after that will be allocated to Larry, up to $40K. Perl support starts at the grass roots. If you've benefited from Perl 1-5, and are looking forward to Perl 6, consider donating to the fund. (The list of donors is already knee-deep in monks. If you've contributed in the past, think about whether you could do it again.) Better still, if your employer¹ has benefited from Perl, find out if they'd be willing to donate, or act as a sponsor.

"How do I contribute to Perl development?" is a common question in the Monastery. Here's one of the ways that's really needed right now!

¹Presuming you have one. I know economic times are tough.

I know the company I'm working for has benefited greatly from Perl and will certainly benefit even more with the newer version of it (that is Perl 6). I'm not sure however where I should start in terms of pursuing my employer to sponsor the development efforts. Are there any good resources on the web you could point me to? Say, something that would more or less clearly state the benefits of Perl (in general terms) to a web oriented business. The troubling task is bridging the gap between developers who find Perl primarily useful and the management. This page discusses the publicity and "good will" benefits of donating. I suppose whether or not that helps depends partly on what your company does. My boss/CEO is a Perl programmer also, so I was fortunate and didn't have to do any convincing. :) - Matt Riffle	[reply]

I have some semi-hard sell stuff I put together that you (or anyone else) is welcome to have--send me mail and I'll dig it out. (At some point I'll put it on the web, after I find that sack of tuits that I lost a while back...) I'm also happy to call up anyone you've got that's interested and needs more info or some convincing. Mail me phone numbers and names for that. (dan@sidhe.org) I'll see about getting a more formal statement together, rather than just referring to my use.perl journal, and get a node posted on it. Probably July 3rd, which'd be tomorrow. (At least for me now) If it helps, there's potential for quid pro quo to some extent (links and pages on the YAS site, discounted training and consulting work, as well as speaking engagements) for companies that donate. Details depend on the amount donated and the folks you want. FWIW, my grant can be extended, but it's third in order of importance, after the grant writer and Larry, which is as it should be. (If you or your company really feels strongly about Parrot over Perl 6, talk to the folks at the perl foundation. Or, heck, me directly, though I'm not personally tax-deductible :)	[reply]

Coincidentally, I was looking through the site yesterday but couldn't find any clear details on how money is used for each of the different funds. I've just had a quick look round now, and I'm still unsure which fund I should donate to, and precisely how the money will be used. This information may be on the site somewhere, but it wasn't anywhere I looked. How about linking to information about what the different funds are from the list of donors and the donation form? This isn't official, but as I understand it, there are two main funds, the YAS general fund, and the Perl development grant fund. The latter is administered by the Perl Foundation, which is a part of YAS. From that one come the grants which provide the recipents with salaries and travel expenses. (The YAS general fund also pays for the Monastery.) I got this from the YAS front page and the Perl foundation front page by scanning down the news items. Someone please correct any misunderstandings on my part.	[reply]
