a simple question requires a simple answer with no patronisation. Perlmonks is supposed to be a friendly place :).
There is nothing wrong with Abigail-II's reply. It clearly pointed out the problem, told you why you should avoid it, and provided a solution. You should not interpret someone emphasizing a point as patronizing you.

the BOLD UPPERCASE seems like a very strong emphasis-ion to me... It is sometimes hard to slurp in all replies to your question in a thread, and using a little bald bold seems very correct in Abigail-II's node.
Further-on I dont see why this node has an 'attitude' it is a strong-harted advice to the novice perl programmer, who made a logical mistake, and can be spared many sufferings in the future by this advice.

I agree with cjf and sinister. The way I read the advice you got was something like watching a parent scream at a child for trying to cross the street without looking both ways even when there weren't any cars on the road at all. You totally know that the screaming is unwarranted on the face of things, but you also totally know that that scream will be embedded in the psyche of that child, enabling it to avoid danger, later when its needed.
Abigail-II's point was one of these. And from your reaction, my guess is that the lesson you learned, while perhaps uncomfortable will not be soon forgetten. Which I think was the POINT.
