Are their any steps I can take to "protect" my intellectual property without restricting the availability of the information?
The presence of a copyright signals your intent. The lack of a copyright obscures your intent. "You are granted permission to copy this material as long as the copy includes this copyright notice." is a common way of protected your right/ability to claim authorship. A good touch is to include a hyperlink to the original as part of the copyright.
